UROLITHIN A

Urolithin A (UA) is a metabolite of ellagitannins derived from gut microbiomes. Ellagitannins are polyphenol compounds naturally found in plant foods such as pomegranate, almonds, and walnuts. UA is studied for its role in cellular health through its effects on mitochondria.

When ingesting foods rich in ellagitannins, these compounds are metabolized into UA by the microflora of the large intestine. The conversion of natural polyphenols into UA depends on certain microbiomes. Approximately 40% of humans do not have the microbiome capable of producing UA.
