CoQ10 is commonly referred to as ubiquinone because it is ubiquitous throughout the body and present in almost every cell. The active form of the molecule, ubiquinol, is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects fats such as those that make up cell and mitochondrial membranes, as well as HDL and LDL cholesterol. However, CoQ10's most important role is in cellular respiration, the process of generating the energy (ATP) that all cells need for optimal health.

Its role in energy production being so critical, it is particularly important in cells with high energy demands, such as the heart. This helps explain why CoQ10 has proven so beneficial for conditions affecting the cardiovascular system, such as high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, protection during heart surgery, and protection against statins used to treat high cholesterol.
