CoQ10 is commonly referred to as ubiquinone because it is ubiquitous throughout the body and present in almost every cell. The active form of the molecule, ubiquinol, is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects fats such as those making up cell and mitochondrial membranes, as well as HDL and LDL cholesterol. However, CoQ10's most important role is in cellular respiration, the process of generating the energy (ATP) that all cells require for optimal health.

Its role in energy production being so critical, it is particularly important in cells with high energy demands, such as the heart. This helps explain why CoQ10 has proven so beneficial for conditions affecting the cardiovascular system, such as high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, protection during heart surgery, and protection against statins used to treat high cholesterol. Low CoQ10 levels have also been reported for many other conditions, with clinical trials supporting the use of CoQ10 for migraines, male infertility, Alzheimer’s disease (prevention), Parkinson’s disease (prevention and treatment), and macular degeneration.
