Butyrate is one of the most abundant short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the colon, where it serves as an important energy source for colon cells. Research has shown that butyrate accounts for approximately 70% of the total energy consumption of the epithelial cells of the colon (colonocytes). Once absorbed, colonocytes rapidly oxidize 95% of butyrate to ketone bodies for ATP2 synthesis. Thus, butyrate is an important energy source for the body, providing 5-15% of a person's daily caloric needs.
