Kukicha, often called “twig tea,” is a distinctive Japanese green tea made from the tender stems and twigs of the tea plant rather than the leaves alone. What might once have been considered the simplest part of the harvest has long been treasured for its gentle sweetness, low caffeine, and deeply comforting character.

When brewed, kukicha produces a pale golden-green cup with a soft, nutty aroma and delicate notes of toasted grain and fresh grass. The flavor is smooth and mild—lightly sweet, refreshing, and naturally calming.

This humble tea recalls the quiet resilience of the Japanese countryside during the time of the Shimabara Rebellion. Many of the farmers and villagers who rose up during that turbulent period lived lives of simplicity, sustained by the modest foods and teas of the land. Kukicha, made from the overlooked stems of the tea harvest, embodies that same spirit of humility and perseverance.

In this way the tea becomes a small symbol of consecration—finding grace in the ordinary and strength in simplicity. What is humble is not without dignity; what is simple can still be deeply sustaining.

Origin: Japan

Steeping time: 250 ml of water per 1 tsp of tea at 85 degrees C for 3 minutes. Can be rebrewed several times.
