HMF Natogen is a combination of four patented human-source probiotic strains that promote gut health in young children. Babies born prematurely, by C-section, or those exposed to perinatal or postnatal antibiotics have low colonization of gut bacteria. Probiotics are safe for young children and effectively colonize the intestines, critical barriers that selectively allow the assimilation or promote the excretion of dangerous substances. The human digestive tract contains over 400 bacterial species, and bacterial balance must be maintained for healthy intestines. Probiotics compete with pathogenic bacteria for colonization of the digestive tract and promote the presence of beneficial bacteria. In addition to decreasing bacterial survival, probiotics strengthen the epithelial barrier. They control permeability by monitoring the integrity of tight junctions and prevent pathogenic adhesion to epithelial cells by increasing the release of mucins on the intestinal surface. Together, these processes decrease the entry of bacteria from the gut into the circulation. Probiotics have a transient impact on the host's microflora; once their ingestion is completed, their numbers decrease or disappear. As the composition of the microflora in children remains relatively unchanged after infancy, it is highly dependent on diet, even more so than in adults.
