Glutathione is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant, not only providing protection against reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, but also playing a major role in multiple functions that maintain cellular homeostasis. Found in every cell, glutathione plays a role in immune function, gene expression, mitochondrial integrity, regulation of DNA and protein synthesis, and detoxification of endogenous and environmental toxins.

While most intracellular glutathione is in a reduced state (GSH) with about 1% in oxidized form (GSSG), this ratio can decrease in response to various cellular stressors, including heavy metals, high glucose concentrations, poor diet, heat shock, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, cigarette smoke, and other toxins, including persistent organic pollutants. Indeed, it is the decline in GSH levels that has been associated with many chronic and age-related diseases, as well as the aging process itself. .

Glutathione supplementation has been clearly shown to increase GSH levels at multiple sites in human clinical trials, including plasma, red blood cells, and lymphocytes. Furthermore, enhanced delivery forms such as liposomal glutathione and polymer micelles (liquid micelle matrix) improve bioavailability, confer resistance to intestinal degradation, and may also enhance intracellular glutathione uptake, bypassing potential enzymatic bottlenecks.
