Col-Sterol is a blend of plant sterol esters used to reduce overall cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. Plant sterols have a structure similar to cholesterol, but their side-chain groups differ. The intake of plant sterols leads to a continuous cycle of reduced dietary cholesterol absorption, increased cholesterol utilization for bile acid synthesis, reduced bile acid reabsorption, and increased cholesterol excretion in the feces. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, daily supplementation of 1.3 g of sterol esters for four weeks reduced overall cholesterol and VLDL levels by approximately 5% and 4% respectively, in 16 adults with hypercholesterolemia.
