Candicin is a combination of natural oils traditionally used to help relieve digestive upset. Gastrointestinal upset, including gas and bloating, can be the result of improper movement of food through the stomach or intestines. Ginger contains oleoresin, which is responsible for its pungent odour. Components of this resin, including shogaols, gingerols, and zingerone, can bind to receptors on endocrine cells in the digestive tract and pancreas. This leads to increased secretion of gastric juices and bile, gastric motility, and gastric emptying. Digestive enzymes from the pancreas are increasingly released, which decreases transit time through the intestines and helps relieve intestinal upset. Additionally, ginger increases blood flow to the stomach lining and inhibits serotonin receptors, which are responsible for controlling nausea. Wormwood oil contains absinthin, an extremely bitter component. Like pungent ginger, bitter components can bind to receptors on endocrine cells in the digestive tract and pancreas, synergistically enhancing the secretion of gastric juices, motility, and pancreatic digestion.
