The conjugation of glucuronic acid with a wide variety of functional groups, including hydroxyls, phenols, and carboxyls, occurs in the liver and intestine.

Licorice has been shown to have hepatoprotective effects, including protection against toxins such as carbon tetrachloride, as well as against the excess free fatty acids that accompany nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Alpha-lipoic acid is a water- and fat-soluble antioxidant involved in hepatoprotection and the prevention of cellular damage. It has the ability to modify the redox status of cells and interact with thiols, thereby increasing liver glutathione content.

Silybin is the most active flavonolignan isomer of silymarin. It acts through multiple pathways, including antioxidant, antilipid peroxidation, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and liver-regenerating mechanisms. It also enhances glucuronidation and protects against glutathione depletion.
