Bio B12 + Folic Acid features a high dose of vitamin B12 to support macronutrient metabolism and prevent vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is an important cofactor for two enzymatic reactions: 1 methylmalonyl-CoA mutase which helps break down branched-chain amino acids and odd-chain fatty acids; 2 methionine synthase which is necessary for methyl transfer reactions, including the conversion of homocysteine to methionine for protein production. A daily intake of 400 mcg of folic acid during the first trimester can reduce neural tube defects by approximately 50%. Folic acid is a methyl group donor, and research indicates that improper methylation may cause neural tube defects. Similarly, a deficiency in vitamin B12 or folic acid leads to an accumulation of homocysteine, which can inhibit methyl transfer reactions. Vitamin B12 enhances methionine synthesis and increases folic acid’s ability to lower homocysteine levels for normal methyl metabolism. The vitamin is also required for the methylation of proteins involved in myelin synthesis and maintenance, and vitamin deficiencies can lead to reduced production of the myelin sheath, which is material necessary for normal nervous system function. Methionine synthase is required for red blood cell formation, and vitamin B12 deficiency has been associated with the production of abnormally large and irregularly shaped blood cells.
