The Berberis Formula is a blend of barberry, goldenseal, and holly-leaf mahonia extracts, traditionally used in herbal medicine to maintain gastrointestinal health. The main bioactive ingredient in these extracts is berberine. Recent research has shown that berberine prevents bacteria from adhering to the gastric mucosa. Berberine also controls the transport of ions and water in the intestinal epithelial cells. It helps maintain the balance between electrolytes and water, resulting in an antidiarrheal effect. Berberine may increase the expression of Na+, H+ exchanger, and aquaporin, which enhances the absorption of sodium and water, respectively. Berberine also promotes the formation of correct intestinal epithelial nexus and decreases the permeability of these cells to promote proper gastrointestinal barrier function. During stages of low contractility, berberine stimulates the jejunum by activating muscarinic receptors, resulting in increased intestinal motility and a mild laxative effect.
