Description
- Methylcobalamin is the active form of vitamin B12 for maximum benefit.
- Superior bioavailability compared to the most common form, cyanocobalamin, which does not convert to sufficient methylcobalamin to correct certain anemias, neurological defects, and aging1.
- Reduces homocysteine levels for protective effects on the cardiovascular system
- Sublingual tablets allow for rapid action directly into the bloodstream.
Vitamin B12 is the cofactor for enzymatic reactions with diverse physiological functions. It is necessary for the conversion of methylmalonyl CoA to succinyl CoA, and for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine by methionine synthase, which is then converted to S-adenosylmethionine. A B12 deficiency leads to deficiencies in both these pathways, disrupting neurological function, including poor myelin sheath formation, production of toxic homocysteine levels, and inefficient energy production in all cells.
Methylcobalamin, the primary circulating form of B12 and the form transported into peripheral tissues, has been shown to reduce not only homocysteine but also inflammatory factors and carotid artery plaque volume in stroke patients, as well as pain and neuropathy in diabetics. Due to its relationship with myelin production and neurological function, a high dose of B12 has been used in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis.
Some individuals, particularly those with malabsorption or low dietary intake, are at higher risk for B12 deficiency. Those with poor B12 absorption rely on passive absorption, which is typically 1% of the ingested amount. Therefore, high doses may be necessary for individuals with increased B12 needs, such as the elderly and those with neurodegenerative disorders.
