Active Folate 1000 provides 1,000 mcg daily of folate from Metafolin®, a pure, physiologically active, bioavailable form of folate found naturally in foods. Folate functions primarily in cell division and is necessary for nucleotide and red blood cell synthesis. Folate requirements increase during pregnancy due to cell division and metabolism needed for healthy placental and fetal development. Unfortunately, approximately 20% of Canadian women of childbearing age do not meet the recommended amount of folate for pregnancy. Supplementation has been shown to be the most effective method of increasing folate levels and yields superior results to food intake. Daily supplementation of 400 mcg of folic acid during the first trimester of pregnancy helps to decrease the risk of neural tube defects by approximately 50%. However, an intake of 800 mcg daily may reduce the risk by almost 70%.
