Methylcobalamin and L-methylfolate help maintain normal plasma homocysteine levels from protein metabolism. Homocysteine can be re-methylated to methionine by the donation of a methyl group from L-methylfolate, with methylcobalamin acting as a necessary cofactor in this remethylation process. In participants with elevated homocysteine levels, high-dose methylcobalamin and folic acid supplementation for 2 weeks resulted in a considerable reduction in plasma homocysteine levels.
