Active B6 Pyridoxal is a source of vitamin 6 in the form of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P). This most biologically active form of P5P can catalyze over 140 reactions. P5P is an important cofactor: 1) in fatty acid metabolism, including the production of important omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids; 2) in carbohydrate metabolism, including the conversion of glycogen to glucose; 3) in amino acid metabolism, including the synthesis and conversion of neurotransmitters from tryptophan to niacin. Vitamin B6 deficiency reduces niacin production and increases the formation of the xanthurenic acid metabolite, which slows insulin activity. Low vitamin B6 levels can also lead to increased synovial fluid between joints, which can cause nerve compression.
