5-HTP, an intermediate metabolite between the amino acid L-tryptophan and serotonin, is extracted from the seed of an African plant (Griffonia simplicifolia). 5-HTP easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases serotonin synthesis in the central nervous system (CNS). Serotonin can affect sleep, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior, and pain sensation. Serotonin also plays an important role in depression, anxiety, and aggression. 5-HTP is one of the few natural therapies approved for fibromyalgia that has the potential to reduce the intensity of pain, morning stiffness, and insomnia. 5-HTP has been shown to increase catecholamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine which are synthesized from tyrosine. It is believed that increased tyrosine availability in the brain allows for increased neurotransmitter synthesis, which helps counteract the negative effects of stress. The addition of B vitamins to this formula provides additional synergistic effects, as they enhance amino acid metabolism.
